Mod Podge Silicone Craft Mat

As a crafter, I have a few go-to crafting items that I couldn't do without. Today I am sharing with you one of my favorite crafting items, one that I use with almost any craft or decor project I work on. This is a review of my favorite craft mat plus I let you know why it's a must buy item!

For many of the crafts that I work on, I paint or use glues. For years, I had been using newspaper under my projects. One day I got fed up with the little bits of the paper sticking to painted areas of my projects that had dried. I searched all of the local craft stores to see if I could find a craft mat that my painted projects would not stick to. The did not have any crafting mats, just cutting mats for paper crafts or sewing.

I switched to looking online for the perfect craft mat.  I read the reviews for the many different and ended up liking the Mod Podge Silicone Craft Mat  the best. I ordered it through Amazon (affiliate link Mod Podge Craft Mat ) and excitedly awaited getting my package in the mail.

When working with paints and glues, there are bound to be some spills. To protect my crafting area, I knew that buying a crafting mat would be the best choice. I looked for a mat large enough that it would cover my desktop, something that would be easy to clean, and I wanted to make sure that it didn't take up a lot of room when storing it.

The Mod Podge silicone craft mat is a good product because of it's ease of cleaning. While you are painting or using glue, if you spill on it, use a damp paper towel or cloth to instantly wipe your spills up. If you have let the spill sit on the mat and dry, you can run it under warm water and use a paper towel to remove the dried paint or glue.

The mat is 14.6 inches by 11.5 inches.  It is a thin silicone mat that is very flexible.  This was the mat, new out of the packaging.

After buying the craft mat, it was time to put it to the test.  I have been using this for almost two months now.  I have used it for 4 different projects.  If you look at the pictures from recent craft projects, you will see that I have been using the mat. (you can see it here and here)  I wanted to use the mat for a while before I reviewed it on here to make sure that I was able to give an accurate review.  This is not a sponsored review, I bought this product because I was in need of a crafting mat.

The first project I worked on used Mod Podge glue. When working on that project, I cleaned the mat as it got dirty. With one simply swipe of a damp paper towel I was able to remove the spilled glue quick and easy. As well as the easy clean up, my glued project did not stick to the silicone mat as it dried.

The next project I worked on was when I painted my mini storage crate. A small amount of paint smudged the mat and I wiped it off quickly.  It was as easy to clean as the glue had been. I was glad to see that when you cleaned things up quickly it worked well.

After that, I didn't clean the mat for my next projects.  After 1 month my Mod Podge Silicone Craft Mat was covered with dried paint.
You can see that it mostly has white paint, but there is some red & blue paints, as well as dried Mod Podge glue.  Most of the paint was a thin layer, so it would not peel off.  To remove the thin layers of paint, I ran warm water over the mat and used a paper towel to clean the paint off.  After wiping the mat in the water for about 3 minutes it was as clean as it had been when I bought it!

To store it back in the package, you fold it in half down the crease, then roll it and put it back in the package.  It's such a simple mat to work with, and it is easy to store.

So here's a wrap up of my thoughts:
* Your projects won't stick to this mat
* Clean up of this mat is quite easy and fast
* This mat is very affordable and you can use it over and over again
* This mat is easy to store and doesn't take up much room

This has made clean up after my crafts so easy, it has provided a place for my crafts to dry, and I don't have to worry about my projects sticking to the surface.  I'm so glad that I bought this and don't have to use newspaper anymore.  It was definitely worth the $12 I paid for it.

UPDATE - After using this craft mat for almost 2 years, I am still extremely happy with it. It has protected my crafting space from paint and glue wonderfully. It's still easy to clean and I love that I can roll it back up and store it in the original box and put it on the shelf with my crafting supplies.  You can see that I use this often when creating my decor and craft projects - Fall Sign, Decoupage Frame for Baby, and Scrap Fabric Wall Art.
