Last year, I saw a picture on Pinterest (see here) of a nice wreath for the 4th of July.  I made one for my door last year and loved how it turned out. A friend liked my wreath so much that she asked if I would make her one. I decided that while I was making it, I might as well take pictures and put together a tutorial so you can make one for your own home..

Make Your Own Patriotic Clothespin Wreath

Supplies Needed to Make Patriotic Wreath

Wire Wreath Frame
Darice Wood Cutout Star Assorted Styles,1 to 4 inches each
Acrylic paint: (Apple Barrel white, blue azure, and Americana lipstick red) (JoAnn's & WalMart)
Surebonder Mini Glue Gun - high temperature
High Temperature Glue Sticks
Mod Podge Silicone Craft Mat
Clothespins - amount depends on the size of your wreath (I used 40 red, 35 white, 21 blue for a 24 inch wreath) (Dollar Tree)
NOTE: There have been a lot of questions about the wreath size I used. Mine is a large 24-inch wreath. The link I provided goes to a different size wreath because the only link for a 24-inch wreath didn't seem to be a reliable seller. You can buy any size or shape that you want to use. The difference would be in how many clothespins you would end up needing to use.

Tutorial To Make A Patriotic Clothespin Wreath

I hand painted all of the clothespins.  I've seen other posts where people used spray paint to paint the clothespins, but I am not good about getting an even coat of spray paint.  So, if you have a steady hand, use spray paint.  But, if you are in the middle of binge watching your favorite tv series on Netflix and have the time, use the acrylic paint.  You have more options for colors and shades that way too.
Update: You can also use a gallon plastic bag, squirt some paint in, add your clothespins, mix around, then remove and set out to dry. That will save you plenty of time.

Before painting, I always cover my crafting surface with my craft mat. It keeps my desk from getting paint all over it, and the mat is super easy to clean and reuse.

After painting the clothespins, it was time to paint the wooden stars.  I like that the stars are different sizes. It makes them look nice on the finished wreath. When the clothespins and stars were painted and dry, it was time to put them on the wire wreath frame.

The wreath frame has 4 wires.  When putting the clothespins on the frame, I skipped using the top (outside) wire and used the other three.  I started by putting the pin on the second wire and extending to the third wire.  The next pin starts on the third wire and ends on the bottom wire.  This way the clothespins sit at different angles and they look nice.  I alternated the clothespins this way all the way around the wreath frame.

I put all of the blue clothespins together.  Then I put 5 red clothespins followed by 5 white pins then continued the pattern around the wire wreath frame. I've read comments that I put too many stripes (red and white bunches). If you are concerned about having the correct number of stripes for your wreath, you can space the clothespins out more than I did or you could even buy a smaller wreath frame to make it more accurate.

Next I hot glued the stars onto the blue clothespins.  I didn't do any certain pattern, I just glued them on where I felt they looked good.  When gluing the stars for this project, make sure you use a high temperature glue gun.  The high temperature will make sure that the stars stay glued to the clothespins, especially when the wreath is outside in weather.

I love how this wreath turned out. I actually keep this wreath up through the whole summer. I'm always a little sad when it's time to take it down and put up my fall wreath.

This wreath is perfect for any, and all, of the different patriotic holidays.  It is nice enough to put up for Memorial Day and keep up through the 4th of July or longer.

    4. What size wreath frame did you use. Seems like the 12" inch does not hold that many pins.

    1. I updated the shopping information for the supplies in the post. I got the wire wreath at JoAnn Fabrics. They have 3 or 4 different sizes for the round wreath frame. Last year they had a square frame that a friend of mine used and it turned out cute too!

  17. What is the approximate cost to make a single wreath?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great question. I bought 2 packages of clothespins at the Dollar Tree, the frame (using a 40% off coupon) at JoAnns for 2.95, a bag of wood stars for $3.50. Paint was .50 each (Walmart). The total would be $10. There will be extra paint, stars and clothespins.

  18. Did you use glue on the clothes pins at all or did they stay in place without it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I didn't use glue at all on the clothes pins. I live in a very windy town and have had the wreath up for 5 months each year for the past 2 years and haven't had any of the clothespins fall off.

  20. At the fire department at work the other night, we saw this repinned by someone and decided we needed to make them!

I found everything on amazon and was able to ship it Prime for free- the cost of all supplies totaled $18 a wreath with the frames being the most expensive part.

We love love love them- thank you for the creative and cute project for us to do! Don't tell on us- we did it at work! Everybody came to see what we were up to and said "Oh, how cool!" Right? Totally cool! ❤️ -Emmy

  22. Are you calling the "top wire" the wire on the outside of the ring or the wire that is closest to the center of the ring? I need help getting started...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Tracy, sorry if that was confusing in the directions. Yes, the "top" wire is the outside wire. I used the other three ending in the closest wire to the middle. I just edited the post to make it a little more clear. Happy crafting!

  28. I made this today. So cute! Any chance you used larger than a 12" wreath like it says in the list of items? My 12" wreath is packed w/pins and I have many pins left over, according to your count. Either way it doesn't matter because it's a nice and fun craft. Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It says it is a 24" wreath but then says you used a 12" wreath form. Is this right? I bought a 24" form for this but then when I gathered up all my things and started to read the directions it said use a 12" wreath .... Help! I am confused! Thanks!

you use for the number of pins in your directions??

  31. Ladies... I just bought the 18" wreath form at Walmart and it takes 99 pins. This is more like what she used.

  36. This is adorable! I have a few questions before I make it. Did you glue the back of the clothes pins to the wreath form? And about how far out did you space them? Thanks, can't wait to make it!

    1. Glad you like this wreath! There is no need to glue the clothes pins to the wire wreath form - if you are using a different base for your wreath, you may have to hot glue them. My pins are quite close together.

  37. What a beautiful wreath. Hung mine on the door today and now my Mom wants one. I used an 18 in wire wreath and hand painted the clothes pins twice. They fit tightly together on the wreath and the color just is amazing. Thank you for sharing your idea!

  39. Ali, this was a wonderful project! I made mine with the 24" wreath (It took 5 less red and white pins than yours but I used a few more blue pins than yours) Ive gotten a number of compliments on it. So thank you for your inspiration for one of the most creative wreaths Ive ever seen.🙋
