Witchy Owl Halloween Treat Box

It's just about Halloween again this year. Time to think of class party treats, neighbor gifts, or goodies for youth groups. What better way to package your treats than in a cute decorated popcorn box! You can make your own witchy owl decorated treat box by following this simple tutorial.

Halloween Treat Box made from a decorated popcorn box

I designed my treat box as part of a Popcorn Box Blog Party challenge hosted by Laura Kelly of Me and My Inklings. She has organized this challenge for a few years, but it's my first time joining, and I had a lot of fun! After my tutorial, check out all of the other great ideas from talented bloggers and don't forget to enter the fun giveaway too!!

I'm not into the creepy and spooky Halloween decorations, so I decided to use my favorite fall animal as inspiration for this project. I just love owls! Grab a few supplies and make your own treat box!

How to make your treat box

painted owl and burlap flowers

I started out by painting my owl and the burlap flowers. I used Apple Barrel acrylic paint in the following colors - Harvest Orange, Pumpkin Orange, White, and Nutmeg Brown. My owl is a mixture of the two oranges and a bit of white on the tummy area covered with more orange.

The flowers are mostly Harvest Orange with a little of the lighter pumpkin orange around the inside of the petals. I used the brown for the toes of the owl and the centers of the burlap flowers.
cover popcorn box with decorative paper and trim
I cut two pieces of paper that were slightly larger than my popcorn box. Each piece of paper covers two sides of the box. I used Glue Dots to adhere the paper to the popcorn box. I folded the extra paper on the bottom and used a glue dot to keep it folded under.

I trimmed the paper that overhangs the top so it was even. I then used my fancy edged craft scissors to make a decorative edge to the top of my treat box.
add ribbon and flower embellishments to box
I cut a piece of ribbon that would go all the way around my box and used glue dots to fix it in place.

When my burlap flowers were dry, I used super glue to add them to my decorated treat box. I first used craft glue, but it did not stick well with the burlap. You could also use a hot glue gun to glue the flowers to the box.

transform wood owl to a magical witch

I cut a small piece of white paper to put on the back of my owl. Since the wood owl has cut out pieces, you would see the polka-dot paper through and it was a bit hard to see the cute outline of the owl. I used Mod Podge to place the white paper on the back of the owl.

Next I cut a small rectangle and small triangle from black felt. I then used a gel pen to make little "x"'s on the black hat so they look like little stars. A fine tip paint pen would also work

I glued the rectangle at the bottom of the triangle to make a hat brim. Once those were dry I glued them onto the owl. I then used craft glue to glue my owl onto my box, with is sitting on top of the ribbon as if it were a branch.

candy and goodies to add to a treat box

Lastly, gather your goodies to fill your Halloween treat box. You can add candy or other little treats to the box. The stickers and pencils are from Oriental Trading and I just love them! Perfect for a class party or handing out on Halloween for kids who can't eat candy.
