DIY Button Snowflake Art on Canvas

I don't usually decorate with a theme, but this year I loved the look of snowflakes and the light crystal blue color. It started with the Wooden Winter Snowflake I made, then I found the cute decorative ornament balls in silver and light blue, and now I've made this snowflake out of buttons. Read my tutorial so you can make one for yourself!** This is a post sponsored by Oriental Trading. I was given product in exchange for this post. My opinions are my own. **

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Oriental Trading about creating a winter post with their products. I was excited to work with them because I had recently bought some great crafting supplies from them. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen me share the coloring book, Glue Dots, buttons and more fun supplies that I ordered. When they offered to work with me on a blog post, I had so many great ideas!

I love buttons, so when I saw the many different ones that Oriental Trading has, I decided to make a light blue snowflake to match the decorations that I had already displayed. I added the three crafting supplies to my shopping cart, quickly checked out, then three or four days later I had the supplies waiting for me on my doorstep!

Button Snowflake Tutorial

First I chose the colored buttons I wanted to use. I laid out blue and grey, then blue and white, then just blue buttons. I liked the look of just the blue buttons against the white canvas background.

I used 1 large blue button, 14 medium buttons, 28 small buttons, and 63 tiny buttons. The amount you use will depend on what size your canvas is. Always try out the pattern before gluing to make sure you have room on your canvas for the size you plan to make.

putting glue onto buttons

I started by gluing the big center button first. Then I worked out from there, placing smaller buttons as I went out the branch of the snowflake.

Each branch of the snowflake has 2 of the medium buttons, then 4 small buttons straight out from the center large button. At the end of the small buttons, three sections of buttons branch out, with three buttons on each small branch.

It takes while to glue each individual button onto the canvas. I turned on a show to listen to while I was crafting. It helps the time go by quicker. It still only took about 30 minutes. The glue dries pretty quickly too, so you will be able to quickly add it to your holiday display.

I think the snowflake goes really well with my other winter pieces and I'm glad that I was able to get the perfect color buttons to make this project.

Visit Oriental Trading to buy the supplies you need to make your own snowflake. While you are there, make sure to check out all of their Christmas items (there are some great sales!!) as well as their Christmas decor. I especially love the silver and white metal lanterns! Lanterns seem to be a weakness for me lately. They are just so beautiful and there are so many things you can do with them!

Do you have a theme for your decorations? I'd love to hear about your favorite decor piece in the comments!
